He began his working life as a cigar maker. Has a strong artistic vocation at twenty years old, so in 1912 he moved to Havana and entered the Academy of Fine Arts San Alejandro.
For years he worked in photojournalism as a cartoonist.
Began publishing cartoons in newspapers Havana. Lives and works in Spain from 1921 to 1924, returning to Cuba in 1925 and revitalized the popular character’s famous Bobo, which was from the colonial period, and becomes an instrument of struggle against the dictatorship of Gerardo Machado.
